Hepatica — your doctor said "fatty liver". Here's what to do next.

Fatty liver is often found by accident — a slightly high ALT on a routine blood test, a comment on an ultrasound — followed by "lose some weight and eat better". Hepatica turns that into something you can act on: it explains your liver blood tests against your own report, calculates FIB-4 when the values are there, shows how each meal fits a liver-friendly diet, and prepares the questions for your next appointment.

Overview

What is Hepatica?

Hepatica is an educational wellness app for people with fatty liver — now often called MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease), formerly NAFLD — who want to understand their blood tests, eat in a liver-friendly way and arrive at appointments prepared.

Fatty liver is one of the most common liver conditions in the world, and for most people it is silent. There is usually no pain and no obvious symptom — just numbers on a lab report most people have never been taught to read. Hepatica starts there: photograph the report, import the PDF or type the values, and each one is explained in plain language against the reference range printed on your own report — not a generic range from the internet.

When the needed values are present (age, AST, ALT and platelets), Hepatica calculates FIB-4, a screening index many clinicians use to decide whether further testing for liver scarring is needed. It is shown for education and discussion with your clinician — not as a diagnosis.

Then there is food. Hepatica looks at a photo of your plate, names what it sees and explains what makes the meal a better or harder fit for a liver-friendly diet — added sugar, frying, refined carbohydrates, fiber — with one practical swap. If the photo isn't a meal, it says so instead of scoring it.

What it is not: Hepatica is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat or cure any disease and does not replace your doctor or hepatologist. AI can be incomplete or wrong.

Audience

Who Hepatica is built for

Newly told "you have fatty liver"

Start with the lab report you already have. Understand each value, see your FIB-4 if it can be calculated, and set one goal for the next test.

Watching ALT and AST between tests

Add each new test and see every value next to the last one. Progress is easier to believe when it's on the same screen.

On a GLP-1 medicine

Weight loss is one of the main levers for fatty liver. Track weight, meals and labs together while on Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound as prescribed.

Watching blood sugar or living with PCOS

Insulin resistance and fatty liver often travel together. Keep HbA1c and liver values in one history.

Rebuilding after alcohol

Alcohol-free days are tracked without judgment and can be hidden from Progress at any time. Stopping heavy drinking can require medical support — talk to a doctor first.

Preparing for a hepatology visit

Export a doctor summary with your results, your saved questions and the habits behind them.

What Hepatica does for people with fatty liver

Workflow

How to work on fatty liver between blood tests — a 3-month framework

Liver blood tests are often repeated every few months. This is the loop Hepatica is built around, so each test tells you something.

  1. Day 1 — understand your starting point.Add your most recent lab report. Read what each value means against your own reference ranges. If FIB-4 can be calculated, note it and write down the question: "Do I need further testing for scarring?"
  2. Week 1 — pick one goal.Hepatica starts from your goal — newly diagnosed, weight, blood sugar, GLP-1, PCOS or alcohol. Choose one weekly goal you can actually keep, such as fewer sugary drinks or more alcohol-free days.
  3. Weeks 1–12 — check meals, check in each evening.Photograph meals when you're unsure and try the suggested swap. A short evening check-in records meals, alcohol-free days, medicines, weight and symptoms. Consistency beats perfection.
  4. Along the way — ask the Liver Guide."Is coffee OK for fatty liver?" "What does my GGT mean?" "Can I drink at all?" Save the answers and questions that matter for your appointment.
  5. Next blood test — compare and export.Add the new results and compare each value with the last. Export the doctor summary with results, questions and habits, and discuss next steps with your clinician.

Comparison

Hepatica vs LiverPal vs Liverly vs LiverAlertMe vs MyFiltr

Based on each app's public App Store listing in October 2026. Fatty liver apps are a young category — most launched in the last two years and all have small review counts. LiverPal and Liverly are nutrition trackers with liver-specific scoring; LiverAlertMe was developed by a liver specialist; MyFiltr combines barcode scanning with lab trends.

In practice

Situations where Hepatica helps

Illustrative examples of how the features fit into a day, not user reviews.

The routine blood test

James, 48, got a call from his GP: "your ALT is a bit high, and the ultrasound shows fatty liver". He photographed the report into Hepatica, read what ALT, AST and GGT meant against his own ranges, saw that FIB-4 could be calculated and wrote down one question — "do I need a FibroScan?" His GP agreed to order one.

Three months on a GLP-1

Maria started a GLP-1 medicine prescribed for weight and blood sugar. She logged weight, meals and alcohol-free days in Hepatica and added her three-month labs. Seeing ALT next to the previous value — and lower — was the motivation she needed.

Lunch at the office

Chris photographs his usual canteen lunch. Hepatica flags the fried side and sugary drink as a harder fit and suggests swapping the fries for the salad side. It isn't a diet plan — it's one better choice, repeated.

After alcohol

Alex decided to cut back on alcohol after a fatty liver diagnosis. He talked to his doctor first, then tracked alcohol-free days privately in Hepatica — hidden from Progress on days he didn't want to see the count.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Hepatica?

Hepatica is an educational wellness app for people with fatty liver (MASLD, formerly NAFLD). It explains liver blood tests against your own report's reference ranges, calculates FIB-4 when possible, checks how meals fit a liver-friendly diet, answers questions through an AI Liver Guide with sources, and creates a doctor summary PDF.

What is the difference between NAFLD and MASLD?

They describe essentially the same condition. In 2023 international liver societies renamed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), to emphasize its link with metabolic factors such as excess weight, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Many doctors and reports still use both names.

Which blood tests does Hepatica understand?

ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, bilirubin, platelets, HbA1c and more. Each value is explained in plain language against the reference range printed on your own report. Import by photo, PDF or manual entry.

What is FIB-4 and does Hepatica calculate it?

FIB-4 is a screening index calculated from age, AST, ALT and platelet count. Clinicians use it to estimate whether significant liver scarring (fibrosis) is unlikely or whether further testing, such as elastography, is warranted. Hepatica calculates it when all needed values are present, for education and discussion with your clinician — it is not a diagnosis.

Can I reverse fatty liver with diet?

For many people, clinical guidelines point to gradual weight loss, better diet quality, physical activity and limiting alcohol as the core of managing fatty liver. How much and how fast depends on your situation — discuss targets with your clinician. Hepatica helps you track the habits and see whether your blood tests move.

Does Hepatica tell me what to eat?

It checks a meal you photograph and explains what makes it a better or harder fit for a liver-friendly diet — added sugar, frying, refined carbohydrates, fiber — with one practical swap. It does not prescribe a meal plan.

Is alcohol tracking judgmental?

No. Alcohol-free days are tracked in a neutral way and can be hidden from Progress at any time. Important: stopping heavy drinking suddenly can be dangerous and may require medical support — talk to a doctor first.

Where is my data stored?

No account is required and your records are kept on your device. After your consent, the photos and text you choose to analyze are processed by a cloud AI service and are not used for advertising. No ads and no data selling.

How much does Hepatica cost?

In the US, Hepatica Plus is $7.99 per week with a 7-day free trial for eligible new subscribers, or $39.99 per year (billed at purchase, no trial). Local prices are shown before purchase.

When should I seek urgent care?

Seek emergency care for vomiting blood, yellowing of the skin or eyes, confusion or unusual drowsiness, severe abdominal pain, or a rapidly swelling abdomen. These are not symptoms to track in an app.
